Buying a dual-WAN router: plan the backup connection first

Explore the guide library · Router buying guides

Check the available interfaces, independent backup service and failover behavior before paying for dual-WAN support.

Two routes need two working services: Primary service; Backup service; Home router
A second socket alone does not provide an independent internet connection.

A dual-WAN router is useful when you have two usable internet paths and a clear policy for switching between them. The second socket is only part of the solution. Consider the backup provider, power supply, data allowance and application behavior before buying the router.

Check the interfaces by exact model

GL.iNet’s documentation lists supported models for changing a LAN interface into another WAN interface. Its multi-WAN guide distinguishes failover from load balancing. These details show why you should verify the intended model and firmware rather than assume that any USB socket or spare LAN port can serve the backup.

Draw the normal and backup paths independently. If both services rely on the same powered gateway or local access link, one failure may remove both. The level of independence you need depends on the work you are protecting.

Price a complete backup

  • The second internet service and any data cap.
  • Required modem, cellular gateway or compatible adapter.
  • Power continuity for the router and both upstream devices.
  • The LAN port lost when it is reassigned as WAN.

Define acceptable failover

Decide whether you need an existing call to survive, or whether reconnecting within a short period is acceptable. A router switching routes does not guarantee that every active application session continues unchanged. Test the actual meeting, remote-access and messaging tools you rely on.

Check the return to the primary service as well. A brief primary recovery followed by another failure can be more disruptive than staying on the backup until the line is stable.

Run a scheduled drill

After configuring the supported mode, simulate a primary outage at a suitable time and observe the router status and a test client. Restore the service and confirm the intended return behavior. Record how to disable an unexpectedly expensive backup path.

Choose equipment that satisfies that drill. A combined bandwidth headline alone does not establish resilience.

What should I check before using a router for USB storage?

A USB socket does not tell you everything about a router's storage features. Before buying, verify that the exact model can share the type of drive and files you need. Some USB ports serve other functions, and supported storage behavior can vary between models and firmware. Write down the drive format, capacity, power requirement and client devices. Add whether each person needs read-only or write access. If the current drive contains the only copy of important files, make an independent backup before attaching it to new equipment or changing its format.

Why can SQM matter more than a gaming-router speed label?

A fast idle speed test can coexist with poor gaming responsiveness when another device uploads a large file. Before buying a gaming-branded router, reproduce the problem under a normal household load and determine whether congestion is involved. Repeat the test on a suitable wired connection. If the problem disappears only when Wi-Fi is removed, investigate the wireless path. If a busy upload affects both wired and wireless clients, the shared upstream queue deserves attention.

What should I verify before using Spitz AX for cellular backup?

A cellular router can provide a useful alternative when fixed broadband fails, but only if it works with your carrier, location and data plan. For Spitz AX, begin with the cellular requirements rather than the Wi-Fi speed class. Check the exact modem variant, supported bands and carrier requirements for the unit being sold. GL.iNet lists Spitz AX as a 4G/5G router with two Nano-SIM slots. Do not interpret two SIM slots as proof of two independent active modems or automatic bandwidth bonding.
