Preserve the provider’s voice service while planning a separate Wi-Fi router or access point.

If a home telephone plugs into the provider’s gateway, replacing that gateway can affect more than Wi-Fi. Identify how the voice service is delivered before disconnecting equipment or enabling bridge mode. A retail Ethernet router may not provide the required telephone interface or provisioning.
Inventory the connected services
Record the telephone connection, television equipment and any other provider-managed devices. Note which gateway ports they use. Do not assume a telephone socket and an Ethernet socket are interchangeable because they look similar from a distance.
Ask the provider for a supported arrangement
- Must the supplied gateway remain for voice?
- Is a supported bridge or passthrough mode available?
- Which features stop working in that mode?
- Can a separate access point provide the desired Wi-Fi improvement?
- What backup-power limitations apply to the voice service?
Compare roles, not just radio speeds
Telephony modem-routers such as TP-Link’s documented VB433v combine functions that an ordinary Wi-Fi router may lack. Even when another device has a telephone port, provider compatibility and configuration remain separate requirements.
Choose the least disruptive topology
If the supplied gateway must keep routing and voice duties, a supported access-point installation can be an appropriate way to improve wireless coverage. If another topology is recommended by the provider, follow its exact wiring and mode instructions.
Test the voice service explicitly
After the change, verify ordinary incoming and outgoing calls using appropriate non-emergency numbers, alongside internet and television functions. Do not place an emergency test call unless the relevant service has expressly arranged a permitted procedure.
Keep the original equipment and configuration accessible until all services pass. Document the final arrangement for household members. The upgrade should improve the desired network task while preserving the provider services the home still depends on; a successful speed test alone does not establish that.
