Should everyday router use rely on stable or preview firmware?

Preview firmware can provide early access to a feature, but it also changes the risk of relying on the router for everyday work. For an essential household connection, start with the manufacturer's supported stable channel unless a specific need justifies a controlled test. GL.iNet's upgrade guide distinguishes official online updates from a preview plan and warns that preview releases may be unstable. Other manufacturers use terms such as beta or early access. Read the product's current explanation instead of assuming all available downloads have the same support status.

Does load balancing combine two internet lines into one faster connection?

Do not buy two internet plans expecting an ordinary load-balancing setting to double every single download. Load balancing distributes traffic according to a policy; bonding a single flow across links requires a different arrangement. Read exactly what the router and any supporting service implement. GL.iNet describes its load-balance ratio in terms of assigning new connections to available interfaces. It separately describes failover priorities. That is a useful distinction: keeping several tasks active across different paths is not the same promise as accelerating one task by adding both line rates.

Why can SQM matter more than a gaming-router speed label?

A fast idle speed test can coexist with poor gaming responsiveness when another device uploads a large file. Before buying a gaming-branded router, reproduce the problem under a normal household load and determine whether congestion is involved. Repeat the test on a suitable wired connection. If the problem disappears only when Wi-Fi is removed, investigate the wireless path. If a busy upload affects both wired and wireless clients, the shared upstream queue deserves attention.

Why might a replacement router need an ISP VLAN setting?

A provider may require a VLAN tag for internet or television service. That requirement is different from creating separate home networks for guests or smart devices. Before replacing the ISP router, confirm both the provider configuration and whether the new router supports the exact required arrangement. Ask for the required service identifier, tagging behavior and any port assignment. Keep internet, television and telephone details in separately labeled entries. Do not borrow a VLAN number from another subscriber's forum post; providers and local deployments can differ.
